Permanent Electrostatic Air Filter (Kennewick (Tri-Cities, Pasco, Richland)) $10  ...more
I bought this air filter years ago after hearing about it on a talk radio show. I don't recall who it was, but I know that at the time, I was listening to Paul Harvey, Rush Limbaugh, Bruce Williams, and Barry Farber. One of them had recommended this air filter for reducing allergy symptoms. What appealed to me about it is that it replaced my "disposable" filter with something that can be washed and used over, and over, and over, never having to buy filters again.

The filter is designed to generate static electricity by the movement of the materials of the filter, and it attracts the dust and traps it in the filter.

As I recall, it was pretty expensive. Maybe in the $50-100 range, but I can't recall for sure. In any case, it worked great for me for many years. In fact, the only reason that we are no longer using it is because the outside unit on our air conditioner failed, and it made more sense to get a heat pump and new furnace than to simply replace the outdoor air conditioner.

So, if your furnace uses 16"x20" disposable filters, this is what you will love. Instead of having to drive to a store to buy a new filter, just wash this in the bathtub, shower, or outside, dry well, and put it back in the furnace.

Update 2/10/12: Had someone write an email with what I think was a question, so will include it here:

My reply:
Yes, I did. I don't remember who it was, I think it may have been Paul Harvey, saying that he bought it and used it in his house, and loved it. So I bought it, and found it to work as he said it did. Saved many years worth of furnace filters. It doesn't fit our new furnace, so it's in the garage. My wife wants to clean out the garage, and I know someone, somewhere would be able to use it.
