The USCG Auxiliary will be teaching its 8-hour "About Boating Safely" (ABS) Seminar. Saturday, February 18, 2012, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. (If running behind, the class may go to 6:00 PM) The Location is Kennewick's Frost Municipal Building located at 1010 E Chemical Drive, not far from the Cable Bridge on Chemical Drive. Plan to arrive 20 minutes early for registration and bring your lunch with you.

This beginner boating class will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a required (Age 40 and under) Washington State boater Education Card and a USCG Auxiliary Certification and Card. Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete About Boating Safely.

You must pre-register at Kennewick Recreation and Community Services located at City Hall, 210 W. 6th Ave. or web site www.ci.kennewick.wa.us. Registration cost per person is $6 for Kennewick city residents and $9 for non-residents. For more information regarding registration, call Kennewick Recreation Services at 509-585-4293. A materials cost of $24 per person and ($10 for each additional family member that will get their own Supplement Book and share the BSS Book) will be payable by cash or check made payable to the "U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 85" at the first class. Mandatory boater safety education will be phased in as follows:

January 1, 2012 - All boat operators 40 years old and younger;
January 1, 2013 - All boat operators 50 years old and younger;
January 1, 2014 - All boat operators 60 years old and younger;
January 1, 2015 - All boat operators will be required to have a "Boater Safety Education" card.
All boat operators born before 1/1/1955 will not be required to have a boat operator education card.
