BEAUTIFUL Antique Friedrich Heyn Children's Carousel Horse (Salt Lake City) $...  ...more
This antique Friedrich Heyn Children's Carousel Horse is believed to be one of the early Heyn-muscle necked horses, making this a very rare find. In addition, a crafted lion's head saddle-cantle that was used throughout Heyn's designs between 1880 and 1900 make this horse a unique collector's item. These details and accounts were verified and authenticated in 1984 by Barbara Williams, Director of the National Carousel Association.

Please note that this horse has been restored. I found this horse in the window of an antique shop in Burbank, California many years ago. The horse had been some external damage to the horse rendering it in poor condition. Being a carousel horse lover I sought out the help of Tobin Fraley, a renowned carousel artist. Tobin agreed to restore him back to his original glory and since the horse has stood proudly in our home for many years.

The asking price is $8,000 OBO -- Please, only serious buyers need call. He isn't a toy, but a work of art.

Background on the Freidrich Heyn Prancer

Friedrich Heyn, the earliest known and established carousel figure manufacturer got his start with a one-man carving shop in 1870. By 1905 Heyn's catalogue described himself as the founder, and first established expert, of the Molbitz-Neustadt carousel industry, adding the largest and most important factory in Germany specializing in fine Dresden horses.

Heyn limited carving flourishes to the accouterments, while creating expressive and refined facial features throughout every horse. The result was an animal with a personality depicted through character rather than embellishment. The same idea was to be taken even further by many American carvers.

Of all the European carousel horses, Heyn horses were the most carefully observed. The carving of the legs is delicate and a near-replica of the natural state. The short backed body is more compact than a live horse, but combines with a graceful swell of the chest to create a fine illusion of reality. The unmistakable head is large, and the nose is little foreshortened, the expression kind, with the glass eyes opened wide and ears standing forward. The manes windswept clumps add life to the figures, as well as, a degree of majesty. Color most often was a dappled gray."

RARE 1904 Utah Cook Book First Presby Church Salt Lake (Salt Lake City) $20  ...more
RARE RARE RARE!

Antique, Historic 1904 Utah Cook Book -- Compiled by the ladies of the First Presbyterian Church,

Tribune Printing Company

Utah Cook Book. Compiled by the Ladies of the First Presbyterian Church. Salt Lake City, Utah: Press of Tribune Job Printing Company, 1904. [first edition] 139 pages, 1 plate of ads inside back cover
One of the earliest cookery books published in Utah, only 2 library holdings located. The recipes are signed by church ladies. Provides a good glimpse of local businesses in the many advertisements throughout the cookbook. Title page says: "You cannot cook in Utah as you did in the East. Every recipe in this book has been tried by the lady whose name follows it. If you fail to get good results it is your fault and not the fault of the directions within." Committee chair and committee membership listed on title page.

WOW! A hard to find item and a Fascinating piece of history. Definitely there aren't many copies of this out there. Very good condition, only slight foxing. Great advertising on the pages that add to the history and knowledge of the times at the turn of the century.

If no interest, I'll see if I can find a museum that is interested- it is unique! Only slight foxing.

Would be nice complement to historic LDS Mormon book collections and the history of life in Salt Lake City. Would make good present!
