"Farinata degli Uberti at the Serchio Battle" by Giuseppe Sabatelli
I have a beautiful oil painting on canvas that is quite old (over 100 years in the family) and I have traced its owners back several generations and, there was no one that knew the name of the painting or who the artist was. I have discovered that the name of the artist is "Giuseppe Sabatelli" and that the name of the painting is "Farinata degli Uberti at the Serchio Battle" the painting "Farinata degli Uberti at the Serchio Battle" by Giuseppe Sabatelli, was painted in 1842.
The large painting depicting Farinata degli Uberti at the battle of Serchio was ordered to Giuseppe Sabatelli in 1840 by the nobleman and patriot Niccolò Puccini for his villa outside Pistoia, as part of a cycle of canvases celebrating the struggles of famous Florentines battling tyranny. Giuseppe was the eighth son of Luigi Sabatelli. A precocious and gifted artist, his brilliant achievements as a painter gained him the protection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany who, in 1833, granted him a monthly salary. Giuseppe Sabatelli worked at the painting for two years and the 'Farinata' was the major work of his unfortunately short career.
We know that the original painting has been copied many times, since the beginning. It was originally commissioned to Giuseppe by a nobleman, however, the painting was instead purchased by the Granduca and the nobleman had to ask for a copy, but it was not executed by the author, who had already died.
We believe that the painting we have is quite possibly the first copy of the painting that was painted for the nobleman who had originally commissioned it to Giuseppe. We are continuing our research to verify this possibility.

Giuseppe was the eighth son of Luigi Sabatelli. A precocious and gifted artist, his brilliant achievements as a painter gained him the protection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany who, in 1833, granted him a monthly salary. Giuseppe Sabatelli worked at the painting for two years and the 'Farinata' was the major work of his unfortunately short career.
We know that the original painting has been copied many times, since the beginning. It was originally commissioned to Giuseppe by a nobleman, however, the painting was instead purchased by the Granduca and the nobleman had to ask for a copy, but it was not executed by the author, who had already died.
We believe that the painting we have is quite possibly the first copy of the painting that was painted for the nobleman who had originally commissioned it to Giuseppe. We are continuing our research to verify this possibility.
