FS- Hydrofoil Sailboat - 1999 Windrider RAVE ((Cedar Rapids, IA)) $8500  ...more
Wanted: Younger owner

1999 Windrider RAVE Hydrofoil Trimaran w/ trailer all ready to sail and hydrofoil at 30MPH !.

The Rave Hydrofoil consists of a wave splitter, two person kayak type hull, two outriggers, three pitch controlled foils, 25' Mast w/windvane, stainless steel rigging, Jib, Mainsail, Reacher sail and pole, new lightweight mainsheet and bungee lineage, windshield, cockpit covers, bildge pump, paddle, life preserver, Garmin GPS and RAVE Owner's Manual. Sails are like new and contain custom lightweight composite mainsail battens.
History of fresh water use, UV protectant and continued closed boat storage has preserved the structure and green polyethylene hulls and foils. Extra original fixed rear foil, rudder foil fuses, tool bag/wrenches and original fiberglass battens. New rudder foil cable. Recent replacement of mast aluminum foot casting.

Modified factory single axle trailer, dual brake/turn, side lights, cushioned cradles with good tires, and spare. This Rave custom trailer is galvanized and transports the RAVE in a folded outrigger fashion (like an airplane wingfold). To launch and recover the Rave, the boat can be completely raised on it's foils and the trailer can be backed underneath the boat. Once the trailer is beneath the boat, the Rave can be lowered onto the trailer by raising the foils making the RAVE simple to launch and recover.

As an engineer and sailor passing through ages of grey, the RAVE has been a delight to own and fly/sail/fly. I have come to a point where employer requires additional travel, thus compromising my sailing opportunities on weekends and days of wind opportunity.
It is a Racing boat. I best describe it as a three hull, two place kayak, with the flying qualities of a tail dragger airplane on floats! In 8 to15 MPH wind speeds, the RAVE is a docile hull sailboat requiring only1ft.draft. In a magic wind speed band of 11-17 MPH, with the 4' foils extended, it rises gently off the water with its crew, and instantly accelerates out to 1.5 the apparent wind on certain points of sail except +/- 20 degrees windward. Controlled with main, jib and reacher sheets, it's akin to directing a team of horses with lots of "Yeee Haw" thrown in for good measure at 34 MPH GPS speeds! Trimming bungee outrigger foils (ailerons ) and foil control stick (elevator), steered by foot rudder pedals, it is akin to flying an airplane in a cross wind on takeoff and landing. Operationally envelope tested in higher winds, my maximum foiling wind tolerance is 25-27 MPH winds. When not on the foils, the RAVE has been personally shown to be structurally tolerant, but a handful in normal hull sail in windspeeds in excess of 32-35 MPH.
List $8500 OBO. For additional information, go to www.windrider.com. for Windrider RAVE information and videos. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call at 918-809-1333.

Of special note: Do to the nature of this experimental owner, one modification tried, successfully flown for a season was a cockpit mounted control stick, computer, battery, fly by wire, single channel servo driven elevator foil system. Provisions were being made to go three channel, when life situation required design freeze. Ultimately, original factory systems were replaced. To my knowledge, the only such system installed on the RAVE. Got a spare computer? Continue the development!
