It is made of heavy hardware, black in color, lots of rivets, I would guess it to be 1890's vintage and most likely was used for railroad travel. It is complete, but has had some use and is in fair condition inside. It measures 40" high, 22" wide, 22" deep, and has 5 drawers on the right side. Howe Folding Army Scale patented 1880. This type of scale was used for a variety of purposes prior to, during, and after the Civil War. A smaller version was used to weigh slaves and later during the Civil War to weigh inductees into the Army and in Field Hospitals to weigh patients. These units fold flat for ease of Transport and is carried by 4 metal handles and then opens up to a functional platform scale. This particular model has a capacity of 1200#, all of the weights are there, it is complete and in very nearly perfect condition I would guess it's weight to be appx. 250#. As near as I can trace this units' history it was used by the Calvary to weigh grain, feed, ammunition, gun powder and supplies. By the patent date it was made after the Civil War, but would have been used in the Indian Wars of the 1880's. To be perfectly honest I have not found this exact item anywhere, so putting a value on it has been difficult. $2,000 buys it; I have been offered $250 for it and found a similar item for sale 2 years ago for $4,000. So bottom line if you would like to put a bid of any kind on it feel free to throw your hat in the ring. Email if interested.
