Knowledge Products -- educational mini courses (Lafayette / Boulder) $17  ...more
**** PLEASE SEE SPAM NOTE BELOW ****
These are a few of the many Knowledge Products survey courses on all sorts of subjects. Each little course of two or three hours on cassette tapes gives you a quick, but really valuable overview of a subject, in this case a little chunk of political or economic history.

- Das Kapital -- Karl Marx
- Wealth of Nations I -- Adam Smith
- Wealth of Nations II -- Adam Smith
- Communist Manifesto -- Marx & Engels / Social Contract -- Rousseau
- The Prince -- Machiavelli / Discourse on Voluntary Servitude -- de la Boetie
- Common Sense -- Thomas Paine / Declaration of Independence -- Jefferson
- Civil Disobedience -- Thoreau / The Liberator -- Garrison

With these particular tapes you can get an almost instant understanding of why communism failed (Das Kapital), but also why it was attempted (Communist Manifesto). "Wealth of Nations" provides the first principles of the economics that doomed communism. "The Prince" clearly illustrates why we say "Machiavellian". Do the Tea Partiers really know what's in "Common Sense", find out? What Jefferson wrote and didn't write of the Declaration of Independence. Did Thoreau really write "All men lead lives of quite desperation"? Never heard of the "Liberator"?

At about $3 a pop per course, well . . .. getting smart can't be gotten any cheaper than that! The tapes are around 20 - 30 years old, but the subjects much, much older. Not much about the Declaration of Independence or Jefferson or any of the others has changed all that much in the last 30 years.

**** SPAM NOTE ****
It's a bummer, but I've received many automated responses that appear to be trying to harvest email for spammers. While some are likely legit, most could well be automated because they don't reference the item for sale and say only "I'm Interested" or "Do you still have this?" and nothing more. Sadly, it appears necessary to ask that if you do respond, please mention a little about the item or something else that says "Hey, I'm human". Thanks.

Killer Road Trip Car Cassettes-Wrlds 100 Greatest Books (88 actually) (Lafay...  ...more
**** PLEASE SEE SPAM NOTE BELOW ****
If you still have a cassette player in your car this could make you a whole lot smarter. It would even work if you have an old WalkMan that plays through your newer car radio. Yes, cassettes are officially obsolete, but the content on these tapes isn't. When new, this set likely sold for over a hundred bucks. What you can still learn from them is worth no less now.

First things first -- there's no way without a magic wand -- that these cassettes could ever contain audio versions of all these books. What is on these tapes are summaries of the books and well done summaries, too, that also give you insight into the lives of the authors who produced the books and an overview of the background on the books as well as a brief summary of the book itself.

There are revues and critiques of this set (now available on CDs) on Amazon at the links below.

Second things second -- you'll see below that a few of these tapes have escaped and are still missing. Fortunately, the missing tapes are some of the least important (Shakespeare's always been overrated, don't you think, and who wouldn't rather see Bogie than hear about Maltese Falcons).

Think you could ever read all those, not a chance, but with these cassettes you could know more or less what's in everyone of them, and figure out which ones are really worth reading, while still being able to hold an intelligent conversation on all the others.

The case that contains the cassettes is a bit beat-up, but works fine if you're pretty careful.

You ought to get this. Why not shoot me an email.

NEW: Also in Select Barns & Noble Bookstores Nationwide

SYNOPSIS:
In September 2038, the world is bracing for the two strongest storms in recorded history. As a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean moves toward the east coast of North America and a typhoon in the Indian Ocean heads toward the Asian subcontinent, no one has any idea that for the next twenty-three days, the earth will be battered by two of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded-changing the planet forever.
After an already damaging year that includes a tsunami from a Philippine earthquake, forest fires that ravage the heat-baked northern hemisphere,
mudslides that cause havoc in Columbia, and ice storms that cripple Australia, the hurricanes have no mercy, hitting simultaneously on opposite sides of the planet. A team of disaster volunteers gathered from military organizations throughout the planet's many nation states frantically works to help the world battle the hurricanes that soon produce the most rain, lowest barometric pressure, and the highest casualty rate ever documented from a natural disaster. Called the Global Disaster Squad, they are soon taxed to their limit.
In the third book in this thrilling series, adventures abound as the Global Disaster Squad continues their quest to save the earth.
